The Federation Council will send an appeal to the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation with a request to reconsider the results of the all-Russian vote within the framework of the “Great Names of Russia” project on naming the Murmansk airport after the last Emperor Nicholas II.
Senator Igor Chernyshenko from the Murmansk region put forward a corresponding initiative during a meeting of the Federation Council, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The all-Russian voting on the “Great Names of Russia” project has recently completed. Many airports in Russia received the names of great and worthy people. It so happened that in the nomination for naming the airport of the hero city of Murmansk there were three names: twice Hero of the Soviet Union pilot Boris Safonov, Ivan Papanin - the famous leader of the Northern Sea Route and Hero of the Soviet Union, and Nicholas II Romanov.
An interesting situation arose: in the all-Russian vote, with an advantage of several thousand votes, the candidacy of Nicholas II came out on top. This information caused a lot of discontent in the Murmansk region, 86% of its residents voted to give the Murmansk airport a different name or leave the name “Hero City Murmansk”.
The Public Chamber of the Murmansk Region sent an appeal to the Public Chamber of Russia not to make this decision. It sounds somewhat paradoxical: the airport of the hero city of Murmansk named after Nicholas II Romanov.
It seems to me that when holding such competitions, the opinion of the residents of the region on whose territory such projects are being carried out should be taken into account first of all. And everyone votes all over the country,” the senator said.
The colleague’s opinion was supported by Senator Lyudmila Narusova, the mother of the scandalous TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak.
“Dear colleagues, this is a clear example of ignoring the law. The initiative of the Public Chamber is based on polls by VTsIOM. You must understand that there is no control over the survey, there is no exact count. It is not clear who is being called and who is expressing their opinion.
And, most importantly, the action carried out by the Public Chamber contradicts the Federal Law “On the Names of Geographical Objects” No. 152 of December 18.12.1997, XNUMX, which clearly states that assigning names of outstanding personalities to geographical objects is allowed only for nameless objects.
Currently, there are no legal provisions in the legislation that provide for additions to existing names of geographical objects.
I don’t know why the Public Chamber and VTsIOM ignored this Federal Law, which has not been repealed by anyone, but the action carried out, disturbing the population, is absolutely contrary to the Federal Law. I can guess for what purpose this is being done, but I will not voice my opinion.
Let me give you a specific example: in St. Petersburg, Pulkovo Airport has not just a brand of an established geographical name, but it is also associated with the great blockade, the Pulkovo Meridian, the Pulkovo Heights, where fierce battles took place. This is a memorial place name in itself.
Therefore, the proposal to name this airport by some other name caused absolutely fair indignation among the townspeople; people simply refused to even express their opinion and vote. But at the same time, the name of Peter I, who is historically connected with St. Petersburg, was given in these polls to Voronezh, where Peter was only a few days,” the senator explained.
In conclusion, Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko addressed senators Chernyshenko and Narusova with a request to prepare a corresponding appeal to the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
