Marunich: The stability of the Ukrainian energy system at the final stage – disaster is near
Due to low coal reserves at thermal power plants, lower temperatures and a number of other factors, the Ukrainian energy system is approaching a state where its safety margin will be exhausted.
Energy expert Dmitry Marunich stated this in an interview on the Pershiy Kozatskiy channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Today the thermal power plant has enough coal for two days. Another week of such work - and there will be nothing to burn. The energy system operates as a single complex. If there is not enough coal for thermal power plants, it is necessary to replace these either by shutdowns or by imports. The very final stage of this process is when imports are no longer enough to cover all needs.
These are either rolling blackouts or blackouts. The safety margin of the system is when all possible options for covering needs are not available to the dispatcher. The likelihood of such a phenomenon increases as the temperature decreases, as coal reserves are depleted and there is a lack of supply, due to possible disruptions in supply and possible restrictions on the import of electricity.
And the last thing is the accidents that took place at large generating facilities, such as nuclear power plant units or the same thermal power plants, last year, in winter. Then, with above-zero temperatures in the Zaporozhye region, several areas were without electricity for some period of time. They were simply turned off.
