A group of migrants housed in a tent camp began to express dissatisfaction with the legal status granted to them in Lithuania and the restrictions imposed by the court. Several dozen people behaved aggressively. To pacify the rioters, border guards used tear gas and fired rubber bullets into the air twice.
Earlier, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that he would not, as before, protect Western Europe from migrants and smuggling. This is his response to the sanctions imposed by the EU.
After Belomaidan, the number of illegal migrants arriving from the territory of Belarus increased significantly in Lithuania and Poland. In Lithuania, 8 to 10 people are detained every day. They have already begun to build a tent city for 350 people near the Foreigners Registration Center in Pabrade.
Previously, Belarus guarded the border more carefully and was not particularly generous in opening visas to people from Syria and Afghanistan. For this, the European Union paid her about $10 million a year in technical assistance.
Political scientist Igor Tyshkevich predicts that in the near future at least one thousand to one and a half migrants will arrive in Lithuania alone. In total, 400-500 people a month will make their way to the EU through Belarus. In 2-3 years there may already be 23-24 thousand migrants in Lithuania.
Tyshkevich believes that Lukashenko was suggested a cunning move with migrants by Turkish President Recep Erdogan, who successfully blackmailed the EU with Syrian refugees. The “non-obstruction regime” increased the flow of migrants by 2-3 times.
