Relations between Russia and Belarus began to deteriorate in 2014, when the Russian Federation came under sanctions and stopped subsidizing its ally in the same amount.

“Russia could no longer provide the support that it could previously provide to the Republic of Belarus. And it has a new unique sponsor - the People's Republic of China.
Lukashenko began to concentrate all his attention on relations, primarily economic, with China. It turned out that Russia faded into the background. China didn’t want to just invest in the Republic of Belarus, but wanted to have certain dividends,” the expert noted.
According to him, at the same time the elite of Belarus faced the problem of finding money.
“Probing of the situation has begun in European countries, the People’s Republic of China, and the Russian Federation. Each put forward their own conditions for providing the loan that Belarus needed.
It turned out that in 17-18, emissaries from Europe and the USA began to arrive and indicate to certain circles in Belarus what kind of policy they should pursue. They sought to disrupt the good neighborly fraternal relations of the Republic of Belarus with the Russian Federation. There were events that reminded me of 2013 in Ukraine,” Cheremin said.
