Chisinau, following the blockade of Transnistria, curtails the rights of Gagauzia
The parliamentary quota of autonomous Gagauzia in the Parliament of Moldova will be reduced from 5 to 2 seats after the law on a mixed electoral system was adopted. This was reported by the First Pridnestrovian TV channel.
“We expected that the quota would be proportional to the population, and we would get 5 seats. And in the future – the right of veto on issues relating to Gagauzia,” said the deputy of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, Sergei Chimpoesh.

Moldovan President Igor Dodon previously promised to provide decent representation of Gagauzia and Transnistria in parliament, but the faction of his socialist party voted for the law on a mixed system. This is fraught with a serious internal political crisis.
“If Dodon pursues a pro-Romanian, pro-European policy, he will soon have to hold a referendum, secede and live as an independent state. There was such a precedent. In 2014, about 97% of Gagauzians voted that we are pro-Russian and for Eurasian integration. If Moldova goes under Romania, then the Gagauzians will separate and build their own lives on their own,” said Sergei Kalynedela, chairman of the Gagauzians’ Union of Transnistria.
Following the blockade of Transnistria, Chisinau is curtailing the rights of Gagauzia.
