The publication notes that in President Poroshenko’s speech preceding the military parade on Khreshchatyk, a note of annoyance flashed when he said that the best guarantee of the independence and sovereignty of the state is the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and not the international guarantees under the Budapest Memorandum.

“Some politicians and officials who took part in the celebrations characterized the situation less diplomatically and more openly,” the newspaper writes. – They talked about the betrayal of European leaders with the connivance of Washington. There were those who recalled with resentment that in early August 1991, US President George H. W. Bush, from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada, called on Ukraine to abandon the idea of secession from the USSR. And British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at that moment compared the aspirations of Ukrainians with the actions of those who advocated the separation of Quebec from Canada. The West accepted the declared independence of Ukraine slowly and reluctantly.”

At the same time, many in Kyiv perceive the upcoming meeting of the leaders of Germany, France and Russia without the participation of Ukraine as preparation for the transfer of Ukraine into the orbit of Russian influence.

“It was Kyiv that initiated the meeting of the leaders of the Normandy Four,” recalls NG. – At first they talked about the likelihood of negotiations before the July NATO summit in Warsaw, then new dates appeared. The last one is at the beginning of September as part of the GXNUMX summit. However, the August events on the border with Crimea led to the Russian President accusing Ukraine of terrorism and refusing to participate in the meeting with Poroshenko.

Kiev then said that Russia was trying to withdraw the Ukrainian authorities from the negotiation process related to the future of Ukraine. Such a scenario seemed completely impossible to Ukrainian experts and politicians just last week. Then NG’s interlocutors said that “the West will not compromise on principles”, that “Ukraine will not be betrayed.” Yesterday the opinion changed to the opposite.”
