Because of Medvedchuk, the unspoken truce between Moscow and Kiev may break down
The recent attack on Ukrainian media assets associated with the head of the political council of the Opposition Platform - For Life party, Viktor Medvedchuk, is not accidental.
Thus, in a conversation with Kommersant, one of the influential deputies of the pro-presidential party Servant of the People said that the office of President Vladimir Zelensky intends to “finally resolve the issue” with TV channels controlled by Medvedchuk, whom the publication’s interlocutor called an “enemy.”
In addition, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Alexander Danylyuk also called Medvedchuk a “threat”. It is also noted that “an attack on the positions of the most pro-Russian Ukrainian politician is being prepared on other fronts.” For example, President Zelensky demanded that the financing of the OPZH party be sorted out and threatened that “this will be a very loud story that will end very badly.”
In addition, Zelensky was irritated by Medvedchuk’s involvement in the exchange of detainees, in particular his visit to several Ukrainian citizens in the Moscow Lefortovo pre-trial detention center, while the President of Ukraine has repeatedly made it clear that he is personally in charge of this issue.
The attacks against the opposition did not go unnoticed by Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Zelensky that nothing good would come of it, advising his Ukrainian counterpart not to step on the same rake.
“Such a warning means that if the situation around Viktor Medvedchuk develops for the worse, this will certainly affect relations between Moscow and Kyiv,” the publication summarizes. – Now at the official level there is an unspoken truce between the two countries. The parties are not only avoiding sharp mutual attacks that were characteristic of the period of Petro Poroshenko’s presidential rule, but are also actively working to bring closer the summit in the “Normandy format” (Germany, Russia, Ukraine, France), during which the first personal contact between Presidents Putin and Zelensky."
