Graham Phillips: I was in Odessa in those days when it all began, and I remember very well what the impression was when I arrived in Kyiv. I didn’t recognize the city: dirt everywhere, fires, clashes, fights, Molotov cocktails - it was a nightmare. There are Bandera posters everywhere, some obviously Nazis...

I previously lived and worked in Kyiv for two years, it is a wonderful city, very beautiful, there are wonderful people there. But those who stood on the barricades and maimed the Berkut were not the people of Kiev. They came from Lvov, Ternopil, and all over Western Ukraine. They didn’t care what to burn or destroy, they don’t live in Kyiv. It was terror, real terror.

And even then I was surprised: how is it possible for the United States and the European Union to support all this. How can a democratic West support terrorists? But that's how it was. They encouraged them and provoked them to do all this.

I stood near the monument to Lenin, which was toppled by the crowd. I remember that this monument stood for itself, and did not bother anyone, and no one paid attention to it. I still don’t understand why this vandalism happened. Destroying monuments is very bad, a very bad sign for the country.

And there were guys standing nearby, “zigging” and shouting “Heil Hitler.” I didn’t understand what was happening, but I knew it was a disaster. I saw that this was chaos that would spread throughout Ukraine, and that’s what happened.

Now there is a civil war, and it will not end. In Odessa, I know, there are many dissatisfied with what is happening, in Kharkov there are many dissatisfied, Kherson, Nikolaev, Zaporozhye. There are many people everywhere who are being pursued and forced to run away.

I have many friends in Kyiv and in other cities, but I am prohibited from entering Ukraine, the SBU will seize me immediately, but there are many people like me living in Ukraine, and this is simply “lawlessness” of those who came to power through terror .

I remember Kyiv and Ukraine during Euro 2012, it was wonderful. Everything is friendly, nice, the people are just wonderful, wonderful, at the fan zones everyone was like brothers. Now this will never happen, Ukraine will never be like this again, everything has changed.

We can say that after the Maidan there is no more Ukraine, and most importantly, I still don’t understand why all this had to be done.”

PolitNavigator: What are the similarities and differences between the events in Kyiv and Donbass?

Graham Phillips: Oh, big difference. I saw it myself, and I can confirm that it was the people - not oligarchs, not politicians. This was not a “glamorous revolution”, it was a people who came out to defend their culture and language. And the idea of ​​the DPR and LPR is very beautiful. People deserve it, their state. But they themselves will not be able to build it, I think. Without Russia, without its help, it will be impossible to create a banking system, build an economy, and trade.

But be that as it may, republics already exist. I love Donetsk very much, it’s like a British city. It was founded by Hughes, there is even a Beatles monument here, and there is the Liverpool Hotel, I feel at home here. And the people here are very adequate, good, love to work and love a peaceful life. But if it weren’t for Maidan, none of this would have happened. People were very frightened by what happened in Kyiv; no one wanted to see fascists here.

I was in Crimea before the referendum, people there simply blocked the isthmus and were ready to defend themselves. The Crimeans really wanted to return to their brother, to Russia.

PolitNavigator: Were you at the referendum?

Graham Phillips: Oh yeah. It was a holiday, people were happy, real happiness. Crimea is generally heaven on earth. I have never seen such nature, such beauty anywhere. The mountains, the sea, the expanses of Crimea - it’s simply breathtaking. And in March there was simply a magical atmosphere there. Thousands of people - and everyone has happiness on their faces. Everyone wanted to return to Russia, and when this happened, many could not believe it. I will never forget those days and what happened in Sevastopol and Simferopol.
