The war in Chechnya saved Ukraine from becoming acquainted with Russian troops back in the “nineties,” when Moscow wanted to reconsider the borders established in the Soviet Union.
Former Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Andrey Reva stated this on the Internet channel “Newsroom”, reports the correspondent of “PolitNavigator”.
“We have been saying for 30 years that there could be a war between Russia and Ukraine. From the first day when Ukraine declared independence, Yeltsin's press secretary Pavel Voshchanov spoke and said: “If Ukraine leaves the Soviet Union, then we reserve the right to reconsider the borders.” And for the first time they talked about Crimea.
Then he was fired, his statement was disavowed, and so on. But you remember that before the invasion of Chechnya, Yeltsin gave an order to stop gas supplies to Ukraine. The troops went to Chechnya, and we had a big problem here,” the Ukrainian blabbered.
"And thanks to the Chechens, they stopped the Russian army then, and we no longer had time to think about Ukraine. And we gained some time to gather our strength and sort out our problems," the former minister said.
