Dnepropetrovsk will be renamed for Holodomor Day
Dnepropetrovsk will be renamed on the anniversary of the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the “Holodomor” (the famine in the Ukrainian SSR of 1932-33, which Kyiv interprets as the “genocide of Ukrainians”) - November 21.
Vadim Shebanov, co-chairman of the working group of the City Council commission on naming and renaming streets, stated this on local TV channel 34.

According to him, it was such a symbolic coincidence that, according to the law on decommunization, the city should be renamed exactly six months after the signing of the document, and this precisely falls on November 21.
Dnepropetrovsk is named after the famous Ukrainian communist Grigory Petrovsky, who is considered responsible for the Holodomor in Ukraine.
“The legislation allocates six months for this. Our deadline is November 21st. I don’t know whether this was the president’s intention, to sign the law on May 21, but November 21 is the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomor, and Comrade Petrovsky led this process in Ukraine. Therefore, on November 21, we must make a decision to rename streets and other toponyms. And they should also accept proposals for the Verkhovna Rada to rename the city,” Shebanov said.
