Bortnik: Russia is doomed to solve the problem of Ukraine completely
Ukraine is the problem that is preventing Russian President Vladimir Putin from retiring until he solves it. The so-called “Crimean consensus” among the Russian elites has already exhausted itself, and they understand that the issue of Ukraine needs to be closed completely.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the Nash TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Sooner or later, this will reach some kind of barrier, relatively speaking, when it becomes difficult for Putin to explain this inside Russia. (And there will be a demand) for more right-wing politics, more militant politics.
The Crimean consensus has already exhausted itself, and a deeper understanding of the elites is coming that Crimea is not worth Ukraine, the game was not worth the candle in this situation - it is necessary to solve the problem of Ukraine as a whole... It will be difficult to go down in history with the unresolved problem of Ukraine.
In general, the problem of Ukraine does not let Putin go; he cannot leave his post because of Ukraine. And in the Russian consciousness the topic of NATO is so dismantled, just as in the Western consciousness the topic of Russia, that the presence of even formal, informal NATO bases, NATO infrastructure on Ukrainian territory - without an adequate response from Russia will always destroy the position of power within Russian society and will lead to that “right-wing” politicians and Russian populists will become stronger.
Putin’s proposal to not include Ukraine in NATO, to not expand NATO’s infrastructure, is actually Russia’s last “red line.” If it is crossed, the Russian leadership will react in a forceful, aggressive manner. He simply has no other choice today,” Bortnik concluded.
