Americans are frightened by the strengthening of the Black Sea Fleet
The United States is rushing to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in part because it is frightened by the capabilities of the Kalibr ship-based missiles, which are now based in the Black Sea Fleet.
The head of the Ukrainian Center for Military Legal Studies, Alexander Musienko, stated this on the air of the Radio Liberty affiliate Crimea Realii.
“One of the reasons why the United States is withdrawing from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty is that they feel threatened by these particular weapons from the Russian Federation. In order to counteract this and deploy a missile defense system that will protect Europe and allies in the Black Sea, a legal framework is needed,” Musienko said.
At the same time, he claims that NATO members such as Romania and Bulgaria are already protected from Caliber by missile defense systems.
“Ukraine has less chances than Romania. But I see positive dynamics in the fact that the Ukrainian missile defense system is being built up, exercises are being conducted, and new missiles are being developed that are capable of intercepting Russian missiles. We are talking about strengthening the Navy. We must follow the same path as Bulgaria and Romania, to which NATO transferred decommissioned ships,” Musienko said.
Director of the Institute of Foreign Policy of the Diplomatic Academy under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Grigory Perepelitsa objected to the military expert on air. According to him, the United States is only planning to deploy missile defense systems in Romania.
“These systems will not be at the disposal of Romania. They will only be based. This is significant,” Perepelitsa said.
