On this day, the memory of those killed in World War II is celebrated in most European countries, with the exception of the CIS countries, reports the publication Zahid.net.
On the morning of Thursday, May 8, it is planned to lay flowers from the regional and city authorities at the memorial sign on the territory of the former Stalag 328 concentration camp, located on the Citadel. An interfaith prayer service will also be held there.
The organizers say that no symbols will be used during the Victory Day celebrations.
“This is a pan-European tradition - not to celebrate, but to actually celebrate and honor the victims of the Second World War,” explained Dmitry Posypanko, director of the information activities department of the Lviv Regional State Administration.
“We are moving away from the Soviet concept of the Great Victory holiday in honor of the tens of millions of people who died in that war,” said the Lviv official.
As Navigator reported, Lviv veterans' organizations previously abandoned the traditional laying of flowers on May Day.
Lviv's Victory Day celebrations are being moved to the European style on May 8.
