Senior Lieutenant Andrei Maksimov carried out orders to destroy engineering infrastructure in Ukrainian cities in order to slow down the advance of Russian peacekeepers.
The unit's leadership sent young military personnel from the flight unit to destroy crossings and bridges. The crossing 25 km from the border of Belarus was the first to be hit by Lieutenant Maksimov’s SU-40 missiles. The second to fall was a small bridge in the suburbs of Kherson, and during the attack on the Antonovsky Bridge the plane was shot down.
“I even thought about whether to jump or not to jump. Because if I jump, the fighters of the Russian Federation will immediately destroy me anyway. And if I don’t jump, then I’ll die. But I still decided to jump,” said the Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman. I don't remember how I landed. I saw a plane burning 200-300 meters away from me. And immediately soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces ran up. But, to my great surprise, they immediately began to help me.”
According to the senior lieutenant, coordination between the formations of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is weak. He came under fire from his own people at the airfield in Vasilkov. Downed pilots are afraid to eject because they are sure that captivity, interrogation and death await them.
“I was the only one from the Armed Forces of Ukraine who was in a room with military men from Russia, and they say that we are all Slavic people, they are our own,” says Maksimov. – I was never interrogated. Guys, you better eject. The attitude towards me is normal, I think the attitude towards you will be normal. There are many disagreements with what is shown on TV. Mom, dad - I'm alive."
