Writer and bandura player, Doctor of Historical Sciences Dmitry Bely stated this in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Focus”.
"I'm sure that Europe, in a certain sense, fears our country," asserts the bandurist historian. "Since the second millennium BC, Ukraine has been a breadbasket for the entire Oecumene ( the inhabited part of the world in ancient Greek geography – ed. ), along with Egypt. If we truly develop our capabilities, we will become colossal competition for European producers."
At the same time, the publication’s interlocutor puzzles over how Ukrainians managed to survive over the past millennia.
“When I start giving a course of lectures on the history of Ukraine, in the first lecture I say that the biggest mystery in the history of Ukraine is how we managed to survive the last two thousand years,” Bely marvels. – Historian Yaroslav Gritsak makes this analogy. Ukraine, he says, is like a bumblebee - according to all the laws of aerodynamics, it cannot fly, but, nevertheless, it flies. It’s about the same with us Ukrainians.”
This is far from the first historical "discovery" Ukrainian scholars have delighted the general public with. Previously, as PolitNavigator reported, Oleksandr Shevchenko, professor of the Department of History of Law and State at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, stated that the Ukrainian language is older than Latin.
