An unexpected intrigue arose in the story of the pardoning of 52 Belarusian oppositionists. When the bus with the fighters crossed the Lithuanian border, one of the pardoned men suddenly came out onto the neutral zone, sat on the parapet and refused to leave Belarus.

The demarche was carried out by the former presidential candidate of Belarus, 69-year-old Nikolai Statkevich, the correspondent reports "PolitNavigator".

Either Lithuanians or Americans from the embassy approached the opposition veteran for negotiations. The old man was adamant. The bus did not wait long for him, but Statkevich sat on the parapet for another 2 hours. And then suddenly disappeared. And no one knows where he is now.

TV journalist Grigory Azarenok immediately confidently stated that Statkevich was in Lithuania. Former oppositionist who went over to the Belarusian authorities during the Belomaidan, Yury Voskresensky, also stated that the old oppositionist disappointed him by the fact that "after putting on a show, he quickly deflated."

However, Statkevich was not presented at a press conference in Vilnius today. The self-proclaimed "President of Belarus" Svetlana Tikhanovskaya immediately took advantage of this to deliver a fiery speech.

"We are glad to see people free, but let's call things by their proper names. What happened yesterday was not a release, but a forced deportation. We are all worried about Nikolai Statkevich, who refused to leave Belarus and had every right to do so.

Now his whereabouts are unknown. His actions are reminiscent of those of Maria Kolesnikova, who tore up her passport during an attempt at deportation. All those released should have the right to leave or stay. Yesterday I spoke about this with my American partners," Tikhanovskaya said.

And Statkevich’s comrade in the “People’s Community” party, Sergei Stavish, suggested that the old fighter was no longer alive.
