The United States is taking a back seat on anti-Russian sanctions
US Defense Secretary James Mattis spoke in favor of a less strict sanctions policy towards Russia.
Interfax reports this, citing speeches by the head of the Pentagon in Congress.
“I look forward to working with Congress to address the national security challenges created by this act,” Mattis told Congress, referring to the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.
According to him, it is important for the United States to have flexible authority for exceptions.
“Otherwise, we will not be able to act in our own interests and will place a huge burden on our allies or partners,” the US Secretary of Defense said.
New American sanctions adopted as part of the anti-Russia law directly prohibit American and European companies from doing any business with individuals on the American “blacklist.”
The US is backpedaling on anti-Russian sanctions.
