The investigation tried to persuade a fighter for the rights of Russians in Latvia to commit suicide
The Riga court today changed the preventive measure for the head of the Latvian “Congress of Non-Citizens” Alexander Gaponenko. He was released after four months in prison.
He was met at the trial by participants in a picket organized by activists of the Russian Union of Latvia. Gaponenko complained to them about feeling unwell.
“The investigation tried to persuade me to commit suicide. I was tortured in prison. Your letters and books that you gave me helped me. My experience will benefit not only the Russians of Latvia, but also all Russians abroad and Russians in Russia,” Gaponenko said.
As PolitNavigator previously reported, on April 20, Security Police officers detained public figure , activist of the Headquarters for the Defense of Russian Schools, and head of the "Congress of Non-Citizens" Alexander Gaponenko.
He is accused of actions directed against state sovereignty, the territorial integrity of Latvia, state power or the state system. This is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years.
