The absolute priority for the Russian Ministry of Defense remains the development of Strategic Nuclear Forces, which provide guaranteed deterrence of aggression against Russia and its allies. This was stated by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

“Currently, the Strategic Missile Forces and naval nuclear deterrent forces are being equipped on a large scale with modern strategic missile systems, and long-range aviation aircraft are being modernized. This will allow them to be equipped with modern weapons to 2021% by 72, which will ensure that the nuclear deterrence potential is maintained at the required level,” the military department’s press service quotes Shoigu as saying.
In the future, the Minister of Defense continued, it is possible to gradually transfer the deterrent factor from the nuclear to the non-nuclear plane, which should reduce the level of international tension and strengthen confidence-building measures.
“First of all, this will be achieved through high-precision weapons. By 2021, it is planned to increase the combat capabilities of domestic strategic non-nuclear forces by more than 4 times, which will make it possible to fully solve the problems of non-nuclear deterrence,” said the head of the military department.
According to him, an important role in ensuring the military security of the state will continue to be played by general purpose forces, which account for the bulk of the tasks solved both in peacetime and in wartime during the localization and cessation of armed conflicts, as well as the fight against international terrorism.
The Minister of Defense stated that by 2021, the provision of the Ground Forces and Airborne Forces (Airborne Forces) with modern weapons will be at least 70%.
“To maintain the combat capabilities of the Ground Forces, the formation of a number of combined arms formations has been completed. The mobility and strike capabilities of the Airborne Forces are being increased,” said Army General Sergei Shoigu.
He emphasized that as a result of the ongoing activities, formations and military units of the Ground Forces and Airborne Forces will have sufficient combat potential to guarantee the completion of tasks both independently and as part of interspecific groupings of troops and forces.
The head of the military department also noted that the entry into service of the Aerospace Forces (VKS) of promising aviation systems will significantly increase their fire capabilities.
“Re-equipment of the Aerospace Forces with advanced combat aviation systems will increase their fire capabilities to destroy cruise missiles by 1,5 times. Increasing the radar field will make it possible to reliably detect various types of air targets,” Shoigu said.
The Minister of Defense said that the Russian Navy is receiving modern multi-purpose surface ships and submarines equipped with cruise missiles.
“By 2021, naval forces will form the basis of a group of carriers of long-range precision weapons,” said the head of the military department.
