Poland will remain oriented toward the United States regardless of the results of the presidential elections.
Ukrainian political scientist Alexander Bulavin stated this to PolitNavigator, commenting on the passage of the current head of state Andrzej Duda and the opposition candidate, the mayor of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski, into the second round.
“There will be no changes in relations between Poland and its eastern neighbors. Poland is a very active member of the EU, although it violates some of its rules. We know that Brussels has very serious claims against Poland and even imposed temporary sanctions against it due to the law on judicial independence.
Poland always strives to be the second center of the EU besides Germany, maintains very close ties with the United States and takes initiative even when it is not asked for. In this situation, it will not be possible to change the vector of foreign policy activity.
Another thing is that if the oppositionist wins, he will be forced to partially adjust, if not the policy, then the rhetoric that frames this policy.
I don’t think that in the current foreign policy situation, the Polish elite is interested in somehow radically changing its relationship with Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, etc.
In addition, during his presidency, Duda matured as a politician, gained weight, he met with leaders of other countries, etc. The mayor of Warsaw, if he wins, will need to “grind in” in international circles for a long time, and only then will he be able to somehow way to change policy. For these reasons, there will be no major changes.” – summed up Bulavin.
