New standard of Ukrainian education: now schoolchildren are required to be able to count only to five
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has approved changes to the curriculum for grades 1-4. From now on, in particular, the requirement for schoolchildren to memorize subtraction and addition tables in the range of 1-2 in grades 10-20 has been lifted.
The corresponding decision was made today at a meeting of the department's board, UNIAN reports.

“The requirements for knowing by heart addition and subtraction tables within the range of 1-2 have been removed from the syllabus for grades 10-20. We left there only up to 5,” said Deputy Minister of Education and Science Pavel Khobzei.
In addition, he said, the fixed number of hours for studying topics is being abolished. In particular, it is provided that the teacher, based on the level of education of the children ahead of him, will himself determine the number of hours for studying a certain topic.
The quantitative indicator of pace and speed of reading is also abolished, that is, we are talking about the existing standards for the number of words per minute of reading.
In addition, according to the official, the changes provide for excluding “irrelevant Soviet authors” from literary reading for young Ukrainians and attracting new authors. According to him, as part of decommunization, a number of songs on the subject of “musical education” were confiscated, in particular, “Down along Mother Volga” and “Holy War.”
