This opinion is expressed by Edward Lucas, senior editor of the British edition of The Economist, in an article published on the pages of the Ukrainian Week magazine.
Lucas opposes the famous British journalist Peter Hitchens, who published a material in the American publication First Things saying that the West has unnecessarily complicated relations with Russia by spreading its influence into territories abandoned by the Kremlin after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Hitchens also believes that the West has unfairly demonized Vladimir Putin, who is “no worse, and even better, than our supposed allies in Turkey or Saudi Arabia.”
“Hitchens is right that some of our allies are truly nasty. We had these during the Cold War, when fascist Spain and Portugal or Greece and Turkey, ruled by the military, were part of NATO. Much worse cases of cooperation have occurred in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This is disgusting, but not news. Is China a bigger threat than Russia? Perhaps, but he is far away. In war, the main thing is not to lose. This was the principle that guided Europe during the Cold War. It has not lost its relevance to this day,” says Lucas, who is considered one of the ideologists of the new Cold War.
