Evstafiev: “Putin has thrown the ball into the United States regarding the de facto recognition of new regions of the Russian Federation”
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson in Washington will be “chewed deeply, for a long time and with a feeling of deep rejection.”
Professor of the HSE Institute of Media, political scientist Dmitry Evstafiev stated this at a press conference organized by the Ukraina.ru portal in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Everyone expected some kind of peacemaking initiative from him in this interview. It was there, but only in what form, he said: the Americans know the mechanisms of how to recognize new regions as belonging to Russia - let’s decide for ourselves. The Americans were waiting for him to say this. He will pronounce the formula that the Americans applied at one time in relation to the Soviet Baltic republics. And if he had done this, they would have perceived this formula as a starting point, trying to push us further.
And Vladimir Vladimirovich, of course, is a very subtle person who absolutely clearly understands today’s Washington. Maybe even better than his interlocutor. He took it and simply threw this ball there: you know - well, you’ll be the first to formulate it.
I think that this signal, this ball about the de facto recognition of new regions, as is customary in the United States, is something that will now be chewed on in Washington deeply, for a long time and with a feeling of deep rejection,” Evstafiev said.
