The publication claims that during the assault on Lisichansk, the “Donbass” that stormed the city showed itself to be a combat-ready unit, and some fighters even showed miracles of heroism, leading civilians to safe places.
“But in any war there are looters behind the heroes. Local residents called what began after the liberation of the city in one word: lawlessness,” the weekly continues. “The city was actually looted.”
Evidence from local residents is provided to support this.
“Lisichansk was unofficially given over for plunder, following the example of the captured medieval fortresses,” the magazine quotes a resident of Lisichansk named Rodion. – The commanders clearly secretly encouraged robbery - the Ukrainian military and the National Guard were looking for something to profit from, fearing no one. The fighters with the “bird” on their chevrons robbed everything they could - shops, stalls. They took away cars that were simply standing on the streets and parking lots, and they did not understand whether they belonged to the separatists or not. From abandoned apartments they dragged everything they could lay their hands on: household electronics, things. They didn’t even hesitate to steal food and alcohol from refrigerators.”
The facts of looting are also confirmed by Donbass fighters, some of whom perceived the looting negatively.
"The commander of the second company, Jacques, even decided to arrest Semyon ( Semyon Semenchenko, commander of the Donbass battalion, MP – ed. ) for the collapse of discipline in Lisichansk, but he was removed from command of the company," David Martiashvili, a Georgian volunteer in the battalion, told the publication.
This fact is confirmed by “Jacques” himself.
“My company liberated Popasnaya on July 18, and on July 25, together with the 24th brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, liberated Lisichansk,” he shared with Vesti. Reporter" details the company commander. – Following the company, the rest of the battalion, as well as several other units, entered the city. The guys fought bravely, several people died and some were wounded. But after the liberation of the city, looting began. The guns from the local police armory, confiscated by the battalion, disappeared. In front of my subordinates, I was loudly outraged by this lawlessness and said that the battalion commander should be arrested for the collapse of discipline and connivance with looting. After this, Semyon, with a verbal order, removed me from command of the company and scattered it to different settlements.”
