"The Ominous Polish Mark": Zelenskyy Has Forever Been Placed in the Same Company as Mazepa and Mussolini
The Order of the White Eagle, which Volodymyr Zelenskyy may be stripped of, was once awarded to Hetman Ivan Mazepa, who defected to the Swedes, and to the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. Both cases resulted in shameful scandals.
Historian and employee of the Ukrainian Institute of Education Sergei Berendeev stated this on the air of the Kommersant Ukrainian video channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Few people know that this order is the highest Polish award. If I'm not mistaken, it was first awarded to Ivan Mazepa during the Great Northern War. The Polish king awarded him because he supported him in that war. And then, when Mazepa made an agreement with Sweden and supported another claimant to the Polish throne, Stanisław Leszczynski, the order was taken away from Mazepa. And now they want to take it away from Zelensky," the historian said.
However, he considers another incident to be “the funniest thing in this story.”
"In 1923, the Poles awarded this order to the infamous fascist leader of Italy, Benito Mussolini. And after all the crimes committed by fascist Italy, after the partition of Czechoslovakia, then Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland, it was never taken away from Mussolini. And the Poles don't even raise the issue," Berendeyev said.
