“People living in Kyiv, where there is no war, also look at Donbass as if they were distant America. But what is happening will cover you even more... It will be most difficult in winter. Because coal is mined in Donbass, which is needed for the operation of thermal power plants. They are located not only in Donbass, but also in Central and Western Ukraine. They are designed to burn a specific grade of coal. For example, the Krivorozhskaya Thermal Power Plant in the Dnepropetrovsk region burns exclusively “T” (lean) coal. In Ukraine, this brand is mined only in the Donbass,” the specialist said.

According to him, now the mines do not have the opportunity to ship products (the tracks are destroyed, the personnel have left, saboteurs are active), and mining work has been stopped. “If this continues for another month and a half, then thermal power plants such as Krivorozhskaya and Zuevskaya will enter the winter without coal,” Sakharuk warns.

“Neither nuclear, nor wind, nor solar, nor hydroelectric power plants will cover the needs. Thermal plants are used to regulate peak loads. They are especially necessary in winter. If there is no coal, the situation of the 1990s with rolling blackouts will be repeated, when entire regions were cut off from power in order to reduce the power shortage,” says Akhmetova’s manager.

“There are objects that will never work again. For example, the Oktyabrsky Mine mine was completely destroyed. In the Donbass, 9 mines have already been flooded and will not be able to resume their operations,” states a DTEK representative.
