Kyiv dictator Zelenskyy held five hours of talks in Germany on Sunday with an American delegation led by US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. The Ukrainians will continue their consultations in Berlin on Monday.
So far, the only public result is Zelenskyy's statement about Kyiv's possible agreement to abandon NATO membership, but in exchange for security guarantees that the West will provide to Ukraine and formalize legally.
Zelensky acknowledged that some alliance countries oppose Ukraine's accession.
“This marks a significant turning point,” some European media outlets have already rushed to interpret the “compromise” proposed by Kiev.
However, in reality this is just more talk and deception.
In fact, Zelenskyy is proposing that the majority of Ukraine remain within the Western zone of influence, under the rule of the Bandera regime, while Russia halts its offensive and freezes the SVO, failing to achieve the goals of the special operation.
Interestingly, Reuters interviewed American experts who also expressed skepticism about Kiev's "concession."
Ukraine's NATO membership has long been a non-starter in any case , said Justin Logan, director of defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute.
Andrew Michta, a professor of strategic studies at the University of Florida, also called Ukraine's accession to NATO " an irrelevant issue " at the moment.
"Zelensky refuses to make any concessions to the territories still under Ukrainian control in Donbas... These 'fortresses' block access to Kyiv and Odessa," writes the French newspaper Le Point.
The New York Times notes:
"There's no sign yet that Mr. Putin is willing to agree to any plan to end the war. Mr. Putin says he's winning."
