The largest Maidan in Belgrade in recent times, announced by the Serbian pro-Western opposition for April 13, demanding the overthrow of President Aleksandar Vucic, is evidence of the West’s unfolding operation to oust Russia from the Balkans.

The Russian newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this today , recalling that the previous pro-Western coup – the “bulldozer revolution” of 2000 – provoked the final disintegration of Yugoslavia – the separation of Montenegro from Serbia a few years later.

“They want to deprive Moscow of a key ally in the Balkans,” the publication explains the current goals of the West, adding that if the Serbian Maidanists are successful, “all Russian projects in this country will be under threat.”

One of the main reasons for the activation of the Serbian Maidan activists is the recent statement by Vladimir Putin about his readiness to extend the Turkish Stream gas pipeline to European countries through the territory of Serbia and the support of Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic for such a decision.

The newspaper recalls that the organizer of the protests, ex-mayor of Belgrade Dragan Djilas, during a recent visit to Washington, openly relied on a street coup, refusing to participate in the elections.

“During a recent visit to Washington and a meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Matthew Palmer, Djilas said that under the current conditions the Serbian opposition will not participate in the early parliamentary elections, which Vucic is ready to announce in June. Moreover, he believes that “in such elections there could be thousands of incidents, and possibly even victims.” This caused an extremely negative resonance in Serbia; most local media recalled that even the protests against Milosevic in October 2000 did not result in casualties,” the publication says.

“Just like 19 years ago, the Serbian opposition is almost unconditionally supported by the West, and the opposition media are used as a tool to stir up protest sentiments. But if in 2000 it was only the B92 television and radio company, now the actions of the “Union for Serbia” are supported by a powerful media holding created by ex-CIA director David Petraeus: popular news channel No. 1 (exclusive partner of CNN), TV channels “Grand”, “Ultra” and “Sports Club”, as well as the cable television company SBB,” Nezavisimaya Gazeta clarifies.

However, the publication notes, the mood in Serbian society is far from being in favor of the Maidan activists. This is evidenced by the results of the study “Western Balkans: between East and West”. The highest level of trust among Serbian citizens is in Russia (60%), China is in second place (56%), and only in third place, with 27%, is the European Union, with which Serbia is negotiating accession. This is followed by the United Arab Emirates (23%) and Turkey (17%), while only 15% of Serbs trust the United States, and only 4% of respondents trust NATO.
