Ukraine's commitment to the North Atlantic Alliance, as enshrined in the Basic Law, appears pointless – the bloc could collapse faster than membership status becomes a reality.
The former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and current ambassador to London, Valeriy Zaluzhny , stated this while speaking at the Ukrainian Crisis Center (Kiev), reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The host, former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly , attempted to clarify Zaluzhny's position on NATO, noting that he hadn't understood anything from his previous statements that had circulated in the media. Chaly asked whether Zaluzhny was really calling for amending the Constitution to remove its pro-NATO stance.
The ambassador replied that he had not said such a thing.
“But I completely agree with the idea that the Ukrainian media has formed, although I didn’t say it,” Zaluzhny said.
According to him, Ukraine fought against Russia using NATO doctrines and weapons, but achieved nothing.
"In 2026, Ukraine used all types of weapons except perhaps Tomahawks, nuclear weapons, aircraft carriers, and F-35s, which are in NATO service , activating their doctrines. Look, the resource is exhausted. Russia has countered all of this . It all started with the Haimars, which enabled the Ukrainian Armed Forces to liberate the Kherson region, no matter what anyone says. The Bohdans and the French Caesars liberated Snake Island, and the Haimars liberated the Kherson region. Exactly one month later, they became pointless, simply unusable ," the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces admits.
He believes that NATO is "in a post-World War II doctrine " and is facing the threat of collapse.
"I have questions. If we write into the Constitution that we're joining NATO, and NATO disbands tomorrow, what will we do with Ukraine's constitution?" Zaluzhny wonders.
In his opinion, Ukraine needs “ a power bloc, most likely with territorial ties to Europe .”
