Japan staged a new provocation over the ownership of the Kuril Islands
The Japanese government has published a requirement for new school textbooks on history, geography and social studies, in which the Southern Kuril Islands will now be recognized as “original Japanese lands.”
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova announced this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We drew attention to the new requirement of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Culture of Japan for new textbooks on geography, history and social studies for high schools, which are required to designate the South Kuril Islands as “natively Japanese territories,” she said.
Zakharova noted that this will inevitably affect bilateral relations.
“It is regrettable that the Japanese government is instilling false stereotypes in the younger generation that are contrary to historical truth and the results of World War II, thereby fueling a campaign of groundless territorial claims against our country.
The sovereignty of the Russian Federation over the Kuril Islands is undeniable, the above actions of the Japanese side cause deep indignation in Russian society, which can negatively affect the atmosphere of bilateral relations,” added the Foreign Ministry representative.
