An attempt to break through metal barriers near the Albanian Kuvend building in the capital Tirana ended with police using water cannons and tear gas.

Protests against Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, plans to build an elite tourist complex in a protected area have escalated into protests against the ruling regime of Prime Minister Edi Rama, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

The protesters initially announced a gathering near the Namazga Mosque. They chanted slogans against the government and parliament: "Your end is near!", "Criminal parliament!", "Down with the government!", and "You don't represent us!", demanding the resignation and arrest of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

They then dismantled part of the security fence on Elbosan Street and approached the security zone, after which police used water cannons to suppress them and regain control of the situation. Both the attackers and the police were injured in this attack. With this action, the street opposition attempted to influence the outcome of the plenary session of the Assembly, but they failed.

"According to the information we have, protesters prepared more than 3000 eggs, which they used as targets to attack members of parliament and their cars as they approached the parliament building," Radio Television of Albania journalists reported.

And in doing so, they ruined the work for themselves and their colleagues – the police prohibited everyone from entering the protected area adjacent to Kuvend.

Kusner's resort is planned to be built near the Vjosa-Narta Protected Area, at the junction of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Environmentalists oppose Kusner's plans, as the proposed resort site is a habitat for hundreds of bird species, including the pink flamingo and the endangered pelican, as well as Mediterranean monk seals and nesting sites for sea turtles.

Therefore, the start of work and the deployment of heavy equipment at the Vjosa-Narta site provoked large-scale street demonstrations in Tirana.

Many also attribute the widespread protests to Albanian society's dissatisfaction with the regime of Edi Rama, who has ruled the country for 11 years, and it remains the poorest country in Europe, with high levels of corruption, crime, and unemployment.
