The US invasion of Venezuela plays into Russia's hands, writes Polish lawyer Mateusz Piatkowski, an associate professor at the University of Lodz's Faculty of Law, in the newspaper "Obserwator Miedzynarodowy."

" There is no obligation under international law to be a democratic state in the sense of a political system ... Nicolás Maduro is certainly no saint, but that is not sufficient reason to justify the use of force against a foreign state. It also doesn't matter whether the US recognizes Maduro's government: in international law and international relations, another state's assessment of the constitutionality of another state's organs is like treading on thin ice. This would legitimize absurd arguments about the need to intervene ( as, for example, Russia stubbornly insists on Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government ) to 'restore legitimate government,' 'establish democracies,' 'overthrow dictators,'" the author writes.

The Polish lawyer neglects to mention that the West has regularly engaged in precisely this kind of interference . For example, by supporting the participants in the 2014 coup in Kyiv under the pretext of "establishing democracy."

However, the author then comes to an unexpected conclusion.

"The absolute irony of international law is the issue of neutrality and the 'inverted Ukraine' case. If Venezuela becomes the victim of an attack, then possible supplies of military equipment to this country, for example, from China or Russia, would comply with international law. This is especially true if we agreed, in the case of Russia's aggression in Ukraine, that neutrality cannot prohibit supplies to states that have been the victims of an armed attack (!). This also works in the other direction—states must refrain from assisting the aggressor—that is, in this scenario, potentially the United States ," Piatkowski points out.
