The Wall Street Journal writes that holding the Sumy region from advancing Russian troops is costing the Ukrainian Armed Forces more human lives than is necessary.

"For six months, while Ukraine held territory in Russia's Kursk region, soldiers fighting there assumed the military would prepare strong defensive positions on the Ukrainian side of the border. Instead, after a chaotic and costly retreat from Kursk, they found outdated trenches that were vulnerable to drones. In some cases, soldiers are now digging trenches in their positions under drone fire," the report says.

Ukrainian military also complain that the areas of Sumy region through which the Russians are now advancing were not mined, as should have been the protocol in the event of an invasion from outside. Earlier, Ukrainian authorities claimed that work was underway in the border zone to mine the territory in order to hinder the enemy's advance.

The publication cites data from the Ukrainian military command, according to which Russia has 50 troops in the area and adds that this outnumbers Ukrainian troops by approximately 3 to 1.

The publication also states that in early June, due to a shortage of manpower, special forces of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine had to be deployed near Sumy to slow down the advance of the Russians.

At the same time, the WSJ writes that the field situation in the Sumy region demonstrates the general tactics of Russian offensives.

"The Russians are probing various points along the line, then attacking with full force when they find a soft spot, as they did in the Sumy region last month. That's forcing Ukrainian commanders to play whack-a-mole, sending in elite units to help plug the gaps," the report says.
