Following the US lead: Serbian parliament members want to lift sanctions against Belarus
Socialist Movement MPs Bojan Torbica and Djordje Komlenski submitted a bill to the Serbian parliament to lift the sanctions imposed by Serbia on Belarus in accordance with European Union decisions.
The people's representatives believe that Serbia joined the anti-Belarusian sanctions under "shameless pressure from the EU," reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The Socialists emphasized that Belgrade had also joined the sanctions imposed on June 4, 2021, banning Belarusian airlines from overflights and access to European Union airports. They expressed their conviction that such actions were politically incorrect and primarily damaged Serbia's reputation , as Belarus is a friendly state that has never committed acts of hostility toward Serbs and has never imposed or enforced the restrictive measures that were previously applied against the Serbian state and people.
"This is a state that did not unilaterally recognize the declared independence of the so-called Kosovo and has always supported the full sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia. Of particular significance is the historical fact that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko visited Belgrade on April 14, 1999, during NATO aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, expressing solidarity at a time when Serbia was under armed attack," they noted.
Politicians have questioned the validity of anti-Belarusian sanctions as the US has begun systematically lifting them.
"The issuance of a license to Belavia in September 2025 was officially confirmed, followed by the additional lifting of restrictive measures in March 2026 against Belinvestbank, the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Belarus, and the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus. Taking into account all of the above, … there are all the political, governmental, and moral grounds to immediately decide to repeal, annul, and suspend all acts and measures by which the Republic of Serbia complied with Council of Europe decisions imposing restrictive measures against Belarus," the draft law states.
However, there is considerable reason to doubt that the Serbian political elite, living with dreams of a “European path” for their country, will once again agree to go against EU policy.
