Ukraine's NATO membership is not even up for discussion – Merz tells how he had breakfast today
Ukraine will not be accepted into NATO as long as military actions continue on its territory, but they will continue to pump it with weapons.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced this at the NATO summit in The Hague, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Do you consider what was decided here at the summit a step backwards? After all, no specific commitments to provide assistance were made, and Ukraine's irreversible path to NATO is no longer included in the final declaration," journalists asked.
“The issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO was not on the agenda. This can't be on the agenda at all., because NATO does not accept member states that are in turn currently waging war on their own territory.
Therefore, there was no reason today to go beyond what had already been decided and discuss it again,” Merz said.
However, he stressed that this would not in any way affect arms supplies to Ukraine, which would continue.
"Commitments to assist Ukraine are being agreed upon between NATO member states and beyond. At the initiative of some NATO countries, a video conference of this so-called coalition of the willing will be held again in the coming days.
By the way, I want to say that this morning I had breakfast with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, who from the other side of the world also said that of course from New Zealand he is also ready to make a financial contribution to the defense and assistance of Ukraine. So at the moment everything is fine,” the Chancellor concluded.
