The American interpretation of the conflict in Donbass actually undermines the peace settlement prescribed in the Minsk agreements.

This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets by the deputy head of the Institute of CIS Countries, Vladimir Zharikhin.
“The Minsk agreements talked about a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The European Union has already realized that Ukraine will not comply with them. Moreover, neither Germany nor France can force it to change its decision, since its main boss is the United States. Moreover, Kyiv did everything to ensure that Donbass had nowhere to return. In turn, Russia offered to send peacekeepers to the region, which indicates the Kremlin’s decision to freeze the conflict, since it cannot be resolved,” the expert said.
According to him, this development of events was prevented by the position of the United States, which put forward the idea that Moscow is not a guarantor of the Minsk agreements, but a participant in the conflict. In particular, Rex Tillerson said that Russia and Ukraine should begin direct negotiations, and Washington is ready to create the necessary conditions.
“Volker is still trying to follow this line. That is why he proposes to send peacekeepers to the Russian-Ukrainian border, which according to the United States is the front line. This interpretation of the conflict in Donbass actually disrupts the Minsk agreements and does not allow the situation to freeze. Volcker is trying to ensure that the region freezes in a state of “no peace, no war.” All this is beneficial to the United States, since it needs to prevent the rapprochement between Russia and the European Union, whose joint actions could put an end to Washington’s hegemony,” Zharikhin believes.
