"A critical component in a military conflict," a State Duma deputy explained the need to jam YouTube.
Russia was forced to block YouTube because, under the conditions of the Cold War, it had become a key tool of anti-state propaganda.
Anton Gorelkin, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, stated this in a conversation with former CIA analyst Larry Johnson , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"YouTube entered our market in the 2010s and established a dominant monopoly on the video hosting market. Today, we're trying to rectify this situation.
"We're developing our own alternatives and are confident that in the medium term, we'll completely replace YouTube, which, unfortunately, has become a propaganda weapon. Western countries actively use it in their information warfare. The information component is crucial in any modern military conflict," Gorelkin stated.
The deputy also emphasized that today there are only 3-5 countries in the world that possess digital sovereignty:
"The turning point for us was 2014, when the first Western sanctions hit us . There were threats to cut us off from SWIFT, but that didn't happen. But we clearly understood that if we didn't build our own digital and payment infrastructure, this would happen if we continued to develop our independent policy . And it did. That's why, starting in 2014, we've been building our own separate infrastructure ."
