Press releases and more

For Russian entrepreneurs planning purchases or a business trip to Shanghai, the currency issue has long ceased to be a simple choice between the dollar and the euro. According to the Ministry of Finance, almost 99% of mutual trade between Russia and China is now conducted in rubles and yuan. This isn't just statistics—it represents a new financial flow architecture that businesses will have to navigate for the foreseeable future.

For Russian entrepreneurs planning purchases or a business trip to Shanghai, currency has long ceased to be an issue...

Yuan as the main instrument of payment

In the domestic Chinese market, including Shanghai, the official currency is the yuan (CNY). However, for Russian businesses, it's critical to understand not only this but also the mechanisms for its use. Chinese banks, especially large state-owned ones like ICBC or Bank of China, reject up to 60-80% of incoming payments from Russia due to compliance risks. Therefore, the success of a transaction depends not on the choice of currency per se, but on the payment route.

In practice, this means sending yuan through a state-owned bank with correspondent accounts in the US is a direct route to a refund. Regional banks in the northern provinces, focused on Russian-Chinese trade, operate more reliably. An alternative route is to use the CIPS system (the Chinese equivalent of SWIFT), which bypasses US correspondents and only accepts yuan.

Exchange rate risks and their management

As of August 10, 2026, the official CNY/RUB exchange rate set by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation is 12,1726 rubles per 1 yuan. However, the rate on the Moscow Exchange may differ: this morning, the yuan was trading at 12,297 rubles. Analysts predict that the exchange rate may return to 12 rubles per yuan by the end of the week, although volatility remains.

For businesses, this means locking in the exchange rate at the time of transaction. Payment agents offer this option for more favorable payments from Russia to China : you transfer rubles at the agreed-upon rate, and the agent sends the supplier a fixed amount in yuan. These services charge a commission of 3-6% of the transfer amount, but they guarantee payment processing within 1-3 business days.

New payment options in China

It's important to note that in China itself, cash has been virtually replaced by digital payments. For one-time trips or small purchases, QR code payments are available through Russian mobile app stores, with rubles converted to yuan at the current exchange rate. However, this channel is unsuitable for regular B2B deliveries, which require sophisticated payment routing through agents or banks in friendly jurisdictions (UAE, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong).

Thus, working with the yuan in Shanghai today requires businesses to master payment corridor management skills rather than knowledge of the currency itself. The market has entered a phase where the winner is the one who knows how to route funds, not just the currency of the account.
