If Germany does not begin to provide serious military assistance to Ukraine, then it will cease to be the leader of Europe, and its role will go to Poland or the Baltic countries.
Former US Army Europe Commander Ben Hodges stated this on the German television channel DW, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Germany should be, if not a leader, then one of the leaders in Europe. But to be a normal leader, respected by everyone for his moral authority, as well as his economic power and other good things, Germany must be seen as an ally of Ukraine in its victory over Russia.
If Ukraine does not defeat Russia or this takes a long time, or if Ukraine defeats Russia without real help from Germany, then no one will respect Germany. Russia will not respect Germany, other European countries will not respect Germany,” the general said.
“It seems to me that we are at a point where Germany can become a leader in Europe, where it can have a positive impact on everything that worries us.
But there is also a sense that we are now at a stage where this influence has moved east, towards the Baltic countries and Poland, and north. Therefore, Germany must act, Berlin must make sure that Germany is perceived as a country that helps Ukraine win,” Hodges said.
