The rapprochement between Brussels and Beijing benefits Russia.
The Ukrainian conflict will end one way or another, and relations with the EU will need to be rebuilt, so there is nothing wrong with Europeans building bridges with China amidst their conflicts with the US.
Yulia Melnikova, head of the Asia and Eurasia program at the Russian International Affairs Council, made this statement during a roundtable discussion in Moscow, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" The dynamics and analysis of EU policy toward China are important to us not so much for the short term as for the long term . Because these are neighbors for whom the Russian space is not only an area through which goods can be transported along the China-Europe route, which is still happening today, but also, in general, an area in which businesses from both sides can connect."
“And the dynamics of their interaction will determine a great deal for our long-term economic development, when the [Ukrainian] conflict is resolved in one form or another ,” Melnikova said.
In her opinion, interaction between Beijing and Brussels will become an “important variable” for Moscow.
"For some reason, it's generally accepted that the rapprochement between Brussels and Beijing is bad, but I think it's actually a good thing. Because it means the EU will gain that dynamic and some form of strategic autonomy in dealing with China, separate from the US . And overall, the Trans-Siberian Railway runs through Russian territory , opening up a wealth of opportunities for implementation," the expert argued.
