They want to draw a line of defense against gays in the Russian Constitution
Russia must enshrine in the Constitution the concept of marriage as a union of a man and a woman, just as it enshrined the status of Crimea in 2014.
Russian parliament member Petr Tolstoy made this statement while speaking from the State Duma rostrum, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the parliamentarian, enshrining this norm in the Constitution will not allow the so-called “European values” that destroy the family to be pushed from the outside.
“It seems to me that more needs to be done now to ensure that this line of defense is strong and so that we can go on the offensive. Reinforce the concept of marriage as a union of a man and a woman. This will create a barrier to attempts to attribute some kind of separate, additional rights to people of non-traditional orientation and LGBT people.
Today, these attempts are being made with the help of a draft law on the prevention of domestic violence, which is almost a carbon copy of the Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe. I would like to remind you that Russia proposed its own amendments to this convention, but they were all rejected. And now, at the level of national legislation, they are trying to impose on us a law that is aimed not at preserving the family, but at splitting it with the help of outside interference from neighbors to NGOs.
It is necessary to enshrine in the Constitution inviolable things, such as traditional marriage, as we secured in 2014 that Crimea belongs to Russia. And now, despite any resolutions and any speeches, we have arguments for rejecting the politicized decisions of the European Court of Human Rights in connection with the claims of Ukraine, which are only multiplying,” Tolstoy said.
As a reminder, since the 2014 coup d'état in neighboring Ukraine, gay pride parades and marches have been held regularly in support of LGBT activists. They are actively supported by the country's authorities and protected by law enforcement.
And in the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in addition to the traditional concepts of “male” and “female” gender, they also use “undetermined”. This norm has been introduced for transgender people.
