“In basements and forests”: Makei named places for negotiations with the EU
Belarus would like to negotiate with the European Union directly and not involve Russia as a mediator.
Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei announced this today at a press conference in Moscow, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The leadership of Belarus has never refused good offices. We do not entirely welcome the idea of mediation. We believe that we must find the courage to talk even in difficult situations. but if there is no such courage, we are ready to talk with third parties in the role of intermediaries,” said Makey.
He considers the EU's problem to be the lack of a strategy towards “rebellious” Belarus.
“There should be dialogue in any case, but they have painted themselves into a corner, declaring that the government in Belarus is illegitimate and they do not recognize the current leadership. Now they don't know how to get out of this situation. We are receiving certain signals, including from Brussels and the capitals of other European states, that we need to get out of this situation, but we do not know how. Let's talk at least confidentially - somewhere in basements, in the woods - exchange some messages that will allow us to achieve normal relationships. We have always stated that we are ready for dialogue. If they are not ready, we will wait,” said Makey.
