Vladimir Zelensky’s predecessors agreed to the West’s behind-the-scenes demands for the transfer of Crimea to Russian control in the hope of a “100-year peace.” However, this will not work with Vladimir Zelensky.

Advisor to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak stated this on the air of the Dom TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“Unfortunately, global politics has another layer of agreements - the so-called behind-the-scenes agreements, which sometimes cause shock because they lead to wrong consequences.

We have a more specific example, these are subjects named Sarkozy, named Merkel - I will not name a whole layer of other people, there were a lot of them, the political elites of other countries, who for a long time, starting in 97, formed the opinion that Russia is a reliable partner, and one must agree to many of Russia’s conditions. They did this behind the scenes, very often signing strange agreements, the informal part of which was, among other things, regarding Ukraine.

You remember “Minsk-2” in 14-15, which led to the tragedy of us, remember the clear conviction of our then new leadership, which came after the revolution, Maidan in 14, the conviction that Crimea must be given up, and this will guarantee us a stable hundred-year peace and so on. That is, there were also behind-the-scenes agreements.

This is a bad story for politics, when there is this misunderstanding of the process on the one hand, and secondly, there is a fear of publicly voicing one’s misunderstanding, or understanding, it doesn’t matter. And finally, thirdly, there is a desire to force behind the scenes this or that country, in this case Ukraine, to fulfill something.

Moreover, with President Zelensky, behind-the-scenes coercion to do something or some kind of incorrect emphasis will definitely not work. I think we can handle this.

But here it is important not to forget - these are partners, no matter what they say, they are partners, they help. The United States is the flagship partner that helps us most extensively and clearly,” Podolyak said.
