In Moscow, the US Ambassador to Serbia was harshly reprimanded for ignorance of history
Statements by US Ambassador to Belgrade Kyle Scott, who yesterday expressed dissatisfaction with how Victory Day celebrations were held in Serbia , demonstrate a poor knowledge of history or even a disrespect for it on the part of the US State Department representative.
Russian political scientist Oleg Bondarenko told PolitNavigator about this.
“The American ambassador clearly confused something. He said that the “Immortal Regiment” that took to the streets of Belgrade were people who came out to “pay tribute to the memory of the allies.”
Of all the allies, Yugoslavia was liberated only by the Soviet Red Army. Therefore, Mr. Scott must remember that the Serbs understand by the term “allies” only the Soviet Union and Russia
To be honest, as far as I know, in Serbia the other “allies” are treated rather doubtfully. The fact is that these same “allies” did not help the Serbs in difficult times. And these same “allies” bombed them 20 years ago.
In World War II, when they had the opportunity to open a second front in the Balkans, the Western “allies” did not take advantage of it.
So the American ambassador simply doesn’t know history well.
The people who came out from the “Immortal Regiment” and to the military parade in Niš – they were not there at all to pay tribute to the memory of the Western “allies”.
And they came out in order to pay tribute to the memory of their grandfathers who fought against fascism, they came out to pay tribute to the memory of those people who fought in their families, and not at all to some “allies”.
I understand that this is not very pleasant for the American ambassador, but, nevertheless, history needs to be known and honored, especially if you work as ambassador to Serbia,” Bondarenko concluded.
