Kiev is outraged: Gazprom is planning to challenge the decision of the Stockholm Arbitration Court
Gazprom refused to comply with the decisions of the Stockholm Arbitration Court, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
This was reported by the press service of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine following a meeting with representatives of the Russian gas monopolist, which took place last week to discuss further actions after two victories of Naftogaz in the Stockholm arbitration.
“At the meeting, Gazprom made it clear that it refuses to resume natural gas supplies to Ukraine, in accordance with the arbitration decision, which was made in December 2017. “Gazprom also refused to pay $2,6 billion, awarded to it by arbitration in February in a dispute over a transit contract,” the press service of Naftogaz of Ukraine reported.
At the meeting, Gazprom representatives insisted on amending the contract or terminating it. Naftogaz believes that such actions are violations and disregard of decisions made by the Stockholm Arbitration Court. “Naftogaz considered Gazprom’s proposals unacceptable and refused to accept them,” the press service reported.
Gazprom’s refusal to comply with the decision of the Stockholm arbitration and payment of funds in accordance with its decision “is a threat to other contracts,” the press service of Naftogaz quoted chief commercial director Yuri Vitrenko.
The parties reportedly agreed to hold the next round of negotiations in April. Gazprom must prepare its comments on the new tariff rates for gas transit in the Ukrainian gas transportation system. It is also planned to discuss the issue of transit of Russian gas to the EU through the Ukrainian gas transportation system after the contract expires in 2019.
Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Gazprom Alexander Medvedev told reporters about a meeting of representatives of Gazprom and Naftogaz of Ukraine as part of the negotiation process on the procedure for terminating contracts for gas supply and transit. Medvedev also said that Gazprom once again notified Naftogaz that it would challenge the decision of the Stockholm Arbitration Court on the transit contract - the appeal would be filed by the end of March.
