UN peacekeepers in Donbass will only preserve the armed conflict already frozen by the Minsk agreements, but will not solve the problem.
Political scientist Vadim Karasev said this during a broadcast on the 112 Ukraine TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This means freezing the conflict for years to come. If this is in the interests of the Ukrainian authorities, and perhaps it is in the interests of the Ukrainian authorities to say that we want to return Donbass, but we cannot, then let’s act this way,” the political scientist said.
He noted that even if we obtain the consent of all parties, it will be impossible to gather the required number of peacekeepers.
“Even if there is an agreement, if we force Putin to agree to this option, where will we gather so many troops, from which countries? Because Putin will say: “These will have to be countries outside NATO membership.” Who is this in Europe? Swedes only. Who else?” thinks Karasev.
“The traditional UN contingent is for years to come without an effective mission. They can only freeze the conflict, but the conflict is already frozen thanks to the Minsk agreements. It is frozen after all, there is no big war. Why do we also need a contingent next to the Minsk agreements? In order to completely mothball this conflict for years to come?” he said indignantly.
