The State Duma is discussing the creation of children's SIM cards.
To protect children from harmful content, Russia will introduce children's SIM cards that will help with parental control measures.
This was announced at a press conference in Moscow by Sergei Boyarsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology, and Communications, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"As for age restrictions on social media, this is a difficult task to achieve, and seems unrealistic from a practical standpoint. There are no technologies for authentically identifying a user online at the device.
"We're trying to make the internet safe for children. There are various parental control features on different platforms, and they can and should be used," Boyarsky said.
"The Ministry of Digital Development is currently proposing to introduce children's SIM cards. We'll discuss this idea, and I think it will be supported. It's not just about filtering mobile internet content based on the child's age, but also about parents receiving real-time geolocation with such a children's SIM card.
This won't be forced; it will simply gradually become commonplace. And if such a SIM card is registered as a child's card when registering on a social network, we'll have taken a major step forward. We can't ban social networks for children; we need to try to make them safe," the deputy concluded.
