The DPR responded to the humiliating decision of the Rada
The Verkhovna Rada's decision to enshrine in the Constitution of Ukraine a course toward membership in NATO and the EU directly contradicts the country's main document—the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine.
The corresponding statement by the head of the DPR Foreign Ministry Natalya Nikonorova was published on the department’s website, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“According to paragraph 9 of this Declaration, Ukraine is a neutral state that does not participate in military blocs. Moreover, the adopted law is extremely humiliating for the whole of Ukraine and for the Ukrainian people. NATO is not even considering the issue of possible membership of Ukraine - thus, the desire to continue “knocking on a closed door” is enshrined at the level of the country’s fundamental law,” the statement says.
At the same time, the head of the foreign policy department noted that with this decision Kyiv further strengthened the split in society.
“For Ukraine itself, the adoption of this law means an even greater split in society - naturally, the majority of residents of the eastern part of the country are categorically against such an initiative.
However, even more important is the fact that the Kyiv authorities obviously have the ability to quickly promote any political decisions they need, including those that could bring closer the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the resolution of the conflict in Donbass. But instead, Kyiv is only engaged in such legislative activities, which further provokes rejection on the part of the Donbass people,” Nikonorova concluded.
It should be noted that after the adoption of this decision, the Ukrainian parliament also adopted a resolution “On an appeal to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the national parliaments of NATO member states regarding Ukraine’s accession to NATO,” which was more reminiscent of an appeal in the form of an ultimatum.
