Vandals desecrated a memorial in the town of Ravni Laz. The desecrated monument is one of the iconic symbols of the anti-fascist movement in Montenegro. Unknown people broke the marble slab of the monument into small pieces, failing to cause damage to the monument itself.
“If government agencies do not respond to this as soon as possible, we are ready to pay our own funds necessary for the restoration of this monument, which is one of the symbolic cornerstones of the anti-fascist heritage,” representatives of the civil alliance public organization said in response to this act of vandals. .
The uprising of July 13, 1941 is a unique historical action that united the remnants of the defeated Royal Army of Yugoslavia (whose units later became known as the “Yugoslav Homeland Troops” or “Chetniks”, who advocated the restoration of a unified monarchy), and the combat units of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, who advocated for the republic Montenegro as part of socialist Yugoslavia.
In particular, the biggest victory of the rebels was the successful assault by the future Chetnik governor, and then captain of the royal army, of the barracks of the Italian occupiers in Beran, who surrendered to the mercy of the victors.
The opponents of the rebels were both the Italian occupiers and their Albanian allies and Muslim collaborators from the Serbian province of Sandjak.
The active phase of the uprising lasted six weeks, but the last actively resisting anti-fascist units were destroyed only by December 1941.
After this, the “red” and “white” of Yugoslavia, who continued to resist the occupiers, began a brutal civil war among themselves, often collaborating specifically with the enemy in mutual extermination.
