In Chernigov, the legendary flight school continues to collapse
The name of the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots - CHVVAUL - once sounded proud. 11 cosmonauts emerged from its walls - Leonid Kizim, Leonid Kadenyuk, Pyotr Klimuk, Anatoly Levchenko, Andrian Nikolaev, Leonid Popov, Yuri and Roman Romanenko, Alexander Samokutyaev, Anatoly Solovyov, Vladimir Titov and many talented officer-pilots.

Independent Ukraine did not need either cosmonautics or aviation. In the fall of 1995, the school was disbanded, part of its buildings was transferred to a local commercial university and a school “with enhanced physical training.” The rest of the territory, virtually ownerless, is deteriorating and crumbling before our eyes.
So, on the night of October 1, the local branch of the State Emergency Service received a report of a fire in a three-story barracks on the territory of the former flight school. According to eyewitnesses, the roof and rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors were on fire.
When rescuers arrived, the total area of the fire was about 400 sq.m., the flames quickly spread through wooden structures: firefighters had to call for additional forces and resources using an increased call number.
Seven more fire and rescue departments arrived at the scene; in total, 7 fire tankers, 2 ladder trucks and 30 rescuers were involved in extinguishing the fire.
The fire was brought under control only at 7.40 am. The fire destroyed part of the roof and the ceiling between floors of the building with a total area of 600 sq.m.
The cause of the fire, damage and departmental ownership of the building are being established.
